What is the weather like in Zanzibar in August and September?
August and September sit in the heart of Zanzibar's long dry season. Expect sunny days, very little rain and pleasantly warm — not scorching — temperatures, with daytime air around 24–29°C and the ocean around 25°C. This is the coolest, driest stretch of the Zanzibar year, which makes it ideal for beach days, Stone Town walks, spice farm visits and boat trips.
One local secret: evenings can feel surprisingly fresh, especially on the breezy east coast. Pack a light sweater or shirt for dinners by the ocean — you will thank us later.
Why is this the famous "Kusi" season?
From June to early October, the south-east trade wind known as the Kusi blows steadily across the island, peaking in July and August. For kitesurfers this is the main event of the year: consistent wind in the high teens to mid-twenties of knots, with Paje's shallow, reef-protected lagoon offering flat water inside and proper waves out on the reef.
August suits confident and advanced riders best — some afternoons the wind really cranks up. September is often the sweet spot: the Kusi is still reliable, but the beach is a touch calmer and lessons are easier to book. Complete beginner? You can absolutely learn in Paje during Kusi, just expect livelier conditions than in the gentler December–March season.
Not a kiter? The same wind makes August and September brilliant for sailing dhow cruises and keeps the humidity refreshingly low across the island.
How busy is Zanzibar in August and September?
August is peak European summer holiday season, and Zanzibar has been breaking visitor records — so the island is at its liveliest. Beach clubs, restaurants and events run at full swing, which is great fun, but it also means the best rooms in Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje and Stone Town sell out months ahead.
September brings a noticeable exhale: still dry, still windy, still buzzing — but with slightly better availability and, in many places, better rates.
What should I book early?
Accommodation first — especially beachfront stays in Paje, Jambiani, Nungwi and Kendwa, and boutique hotels in Stone Town. Kite courses and equipment rental in Paje also fill up in August, so reserve your school in advance.
Airport transfers and car hire are worth arranging before arrival, and popular excursions — Mnemba snorkelling trips, Safari Blue, Jozani Forest, sunset cruises — are best booked a few days ahead in August. If your dream dinner spot is on your list, reserve a table; the top restaurants get busy in peak weeks.
What does it cost to enter and stay?
Remember Tanzania now requires an online visa (visa on arrival has been discontinued), and all visitors to Zanzibar pay a mandatory inbound travel insurance fee of 44 USD. If your plans include snorkelling around Mnemba or other protected waters, factor in marine conservation area fees of 10 USD per adult per excursion.
Is August or September better for me?
Choose August if you want maximum energy: peak wind for advanced kiting, the biggest crowd of fellow travellers and the fullest events calendar. Choose September if you prefer the same great weather with a little more space, easier bookings and often friendlier prices.
Either way, you are landing in Zanzibar at its sunniest and breeziest best. Check the Events section of the Zanzibar App for what's on during your dates, and browse our guide for more local tips.
